WP2: Communication of the Project and its Results

WP2 in parallel to the other WPs, developed forms to communicate the results of the other WPs to different audiences — from technical experts to a more general audience. One outcome of the project is a set of guideline documents which have been translated into other languages as well.

WP3: Recyclability of Packaging

In WP3 a large recyclability assessment campaign was launched in the CE region using a  newly developed laboratory method for testing paper based packaging recyclability. At the end of the project over 160 packaging products collected in the CE region were tested and used to construct an Electronic database containing results and relevant product information. A score card assessment was implemented and submitted to European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC) for potential adoption. Besides, the deinkability assessment of 90 graphic products, collected in the countries of the PPs, did not only enlarge the existing deinkability database geographically but also contributed to the revision of the Deinking Scorecard, which was adopted by ERPC in October 2014.

WP4: Improving collection strategies for paper for recycling

Objective of WP4 was to develop recommendations for improving existing or initially installing collections systems taking into account major local and regional conditions crucial for the success. The work focused on the collection from households as there lies — especially in countries and regions with low recycling rates — the most potential for improvements. Data were retrieved by questioning and discussion with stakeholders (paper mills, local authorities and waste management companies) and data/literature research. The following gives a short overview about the results.

WP5: LCA Design

The aim of WP5 was to evaluate the influence of product design on environmental sustainability. More specifically the focus was to highlight the emissions during paper recycling stock preparation when producing a new product. In this context the project performed two screening product categories LCA studies and two pilot LCA studies with companies to verify the impact of product design. Besides, an eco-recycling web based calculator was developed. This tool represents an easy to use instrument to calculate the effect of product design on most relevant selected environmental parameters of the recycling stock preparation. It cannot replace a full LCA study but on the other hand it can provide an approximate value of CO2 emissions based on product categories and/or results of the recyclability assessment.

WP6: Recycling Policy and Strategy

Based on the brainstorming sessions as well as on a large number of answers collected via mail, phone interviews, direct contacts and on-line based questionnaires in five countries, two strategic documents were developed (i) Portray of present body of rules on paper recycling in CE, (ii) Roadmap policy guidelines to improve the framework of regulation in paper recycling. They represent the project position on this topic and will be used for further discussion with local authorities aimed at facilitating the implementation of proper conditions for improving the quality of paper for recycling
